Transparent Oceans: The Defeat of the Soviet Submarine Force
The Cold War pitted the Soviet Navy and the US Navy against each other throughout the oceans of the world, using the fundamentals of ocean acoustics, undersea topography, sonar, and ocean physics. Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW) was employed in the deep oceans, the littorals, and all parts of the seven seas. ASW and use of sophisticated military hardware, embroiled both services in toe-to-toe antagonism. The threat of nuclear annihilation from the sea to both countries was always present. Finally, after years of unstinting effort by a small group of people, the U. S. Navy ASW programs and operations succeeded in making the Soviet Union’s submarine force stand down. The detection and neutralization of the Soviet missile submarines was the responsibility of the United States Navy; it remained their number one priority throughout the Cold War.

The apparently unsolvable problem of neutralizing the Soviet submarine threat was actually solved by an unknown, highly-classified program called the Long Range Acoustic Propagation Project (LRAPP). The successes of LRAPP allowed U. S. Navy forces to find submarines under any conditions, in any ocean; as a result the Soviet submarine force could essentially be destroyed, on command. The solution to the ASW problem was a major part of the success of the United States in winning the Cold War.

Reviews
“The Cold War was essentially a battle of technologies and of mind-games on how best to use scientific breakthroughs. One of the most dangerous threats to the United States was the missile-carrying, nuclear-powered Soviet submarines that roamed freely in the oceans of the world. This book is a first-time revelation of the details of how that threat was defeated by forcing the oceans to become “transparent,” thus making previously shrouded submarines easily detectable. Written in a largely non-technical style that makes understandable the myriad technical details of critical scientific and operational thrusts that defeated the treacherous Soviet submarine threat and greatly assisted in achieving victory in the Cold War. This is a good read for science and Navy enthusiasts.”
M. Dick Van Orden, Rear Admiral (Retired), United States Navy (Former Chief of Naval Research)

"The course of History is changed when dedicated people with a common vision work hard to achieve it. Transparent Oceans is the story of such a vision and and how it allowed a major breakthrough in the development of ASW equipment and US Navy ASW tactics."
Robert Adler, Captain (Ret),
United States Navy, ASW Specialist
